    • Obituary - Fred James Olmstead

      Fred J. Olmstead, pioneer resident of the town of Ruby passed awayFriday, Dec 5, 1958,
      after a short illness at a hospital in Alexandria, VA.

      Fred Olmstead was born June 8, 1869 at Colechester, Vermont the son ofthe late
      Mr. and Mrs. Alfred D. Olmstead. At the age of 11 months he moved withhis parents
      to Hudson Prairie, WI then to Clear Lake and in 1904 Ruby, Wisconsin.

      In 1905 he married the late Effie Crawford Olmstead in Ruby where theylived until
      3 years ago when they moved to Alexandria, VA to make their home with a
      daughter, Mrs. Bruce Fast.

      He is survived by two sons, Lawrence of Cornell and Floyd of Ruby, fivedaughters,
      Mrs. Roy Stordahl (Beatrice), Vernice both of Cornell, Mrs. KennethNelson of
      Colburn (Vera), Mrs. Bruce Fast (Ruby) and Mrs. Morris Johnson (Hazel) of
      Alexandria, Va. Two daughters by a previous marriage Mrs. Eva Ridgeway
      and Stella Politio of Des Moines, IA and Chicago, IL, a brother Perl ofLadysmith,
      WI, twenty seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He waspreceded
      in death by his wife Effie who passed away Sept. 15, 1968 and one brother
      Charles of Beloit, WI.

      Mr. Olmstead spent his younger years in the logging business, surveyingand making
      most of the roads in and around the town of Ruby and later years became afarmer.
      He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Drywood.

      Funeral Services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. at OurSavior's Lutheran
      Church of Cornell with Rev. David Campbell officiating. Burial will takeplace
      in the Cornell Cemetery.

      Among the pallbearers will be five grandsons, Dennis and Fred Olmstead,Clarence and
      Knute Nelson, Tom Stordahl, and a great nephew.



      James Frederick Olmstead was born 8 June 1868 in Colechester, VT. He waseleven months
      old when his parents moved to Hudson Prairie, WI and lived there untilthey moved to
      Clear Lake, WI, in 1876. He married Mary Tuttle of the same place in1887. He worked
      for the Willow River Lumber Co. at Grandview, WI in his younger days andafter becoming
      foreman he worked fourteen years more. James and Mary had four childrenprior to her
      death in June 1904 at Clear Lake, WI. James left Clear Lake and come towork as foreman
      at the Ruby Lumber Co. at Ruby, WI in the winter and as foreman at theRuby Saw Mill
      during the summer months. He logged for the Owen Lumber Co. at JumpRiver, WI and
      at Exland, WI and then logged for himself for several years. Since thenhe had been a
      cruiser, farmer, and foreman of the town roads in the town of Ruby.James married
      for the second time on 2 July 1905 to Effie Rosella Crawford (Born 21 Feb1887, at Necedah,
      WI. daughter of William Crawford of Ruby, WI) There were seven childrenborn to this
      marriage, all were born in the same house in Ruby where they lived untilit was destroyed
      by fire on 10 Dec 1937. On Christmas Eve, 14 days later James and Effieand the children
      were in their new house. Effie died on Sept. 15, 1958 and James on Dec.5, 1958. They
      had been living at the home of their daughter, Ruby (Bruce) Fast inAlexandria, VA.
      James fathered 11 children.
