- Information found on FTM CD #180--RI Genalogies, 'Some Notes On 18th Century Block Island' , seems to support my theory that the Hannah generally attributed to George and Tabitha Tefft Gardiner, is actuually a daughter of Nicholas and Hannah Palmer Gardiner.
An article on a George Gardner, born Nov 2, 1696, died before Jan. 2, 1787, when his Will was proved; states that he was the son of Nicholas and Hannah Gardiner. Nicholas was the son of George Gardiner and Herodias Long Hicks Gardiner Porter. Hannah was the daughter of George Palmer and Bethia Mowrey Palmer.
This George married twice. First Susannah, who was POSSIBLY a daughter of Robert Hazard.
He married second, Sarah Potter, widow of Ichabod Potter, daughter of John Robinson.
George's father, Nicholas died intestate, some time in 1712. (Austin's RI Dictionary has an entry saying that son Nicholas was given Administration in 1712. No mention of widow, Hannah there, or in the next entry for 1714, when son Nicholas told the authorites he believed his father wished the estate to be divided among the three sons--Nicholas, George and Ezekiel. These last two were still underage at that date. There is no mention of any sisters.)
Two articles on the SHEFFIELD Family relate that Joseph and his wife Mary Sheriff OR Shreive, had a son Edmund, born April 1694. He married Sarah, born Mar 18, 1698, daughter of Nicholas Gardiner and Hannah Palmer (Arnold's VR SK). The son of Edmund and Sarah, Capt. Josiah Sheffield married '.....his FIRST COUSIN, Sarah, daughter of George Gardiner of So. Kingston....'. That would make George Gardiner, father of Sarah, the bride, and Sarah Gardiner Sheffield, mother of Josiah, the groom, BROTHER and SISTER, children of Nicholas and Hannah Palmer Gardiner.
Still another article on this CD concerns the Westcott Family. It is from AUSTIN's entry for Josiah WESTCOTT that we are told his wife Hannah was daughter of George and Tabitha Gardiner.)
This Westcott article mentions Caleb Westcott, son of Josiah and Hannah (Gardiner) Westcott. It states that '...(Caleb) he married, May 27, 1739, his COUSIN, Hannah, daughter of George Gardiner.......
She was the SISTER of Sarah Gardiner who married first Capt. Josiah Sheffield....'
So it would seem that Sarah and George were sister and brother. Sarah and Hannah were sisters. So Hannah and George were ALSO sister and brother--
