Notes |
- !Thompson Jones was killed during the Civil War by rifle by bushwhacking at
Bayou Metro, Arkansas. He was a private in Company G of the 8th Regiment Mo Cavalry of the
Union Army. His commanding officer was Captain Jas. Garrison. Thompson enlisted 10
July 1862 at Springfield, MO age 35. He was 5' 11' dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes. He was killed 24th of September 1863 in service.
I have a copy of Captain Garrison's account of the incident in which Thompson lost his life. I obtained this at the National Archives from the Pension area. In Capt. Garrison's words, " Thompson Jones a Private of Co. G 8th Cav Mo. Vols. on the 22 Sept1863. while the company was camped on Bayou Metro, twenty miles east of Little Rock (Arkansas) was ordered with his team (he being teamster) out in to the country for forage. On his return to Camp with forage, the foraging party was fired into by a paryof guerillas who were lying in ambush, and Thomson Jones was shot from his mule and died in five munutes afterwards. He was killed in the discharge of his duties, and his widow deserves a Pension. The above I certify on honor to be the facts concerninghis death.
Respectfully your able serv't , Jas. H. Garrison, Capt. 8th Cav.
A story Elias 'Thompson' Jones told on his last furlough was about when he
had run out of water and was dying of thirst. He woke up in the morning and a
heavy dew had fallen during the night. He saw a dried out buffalo chip with
the middle part sunken in. It had caught the dew of the night. Thompson drank
this and said it was the sweetest water he had ever tasted and that that water
had saved his life.
The last time William Smith Jones saw his father, was when his father was on furlough. Thompson was sitting on a big white horse. William saw his dad standing by the barn winding his lariet up. He then mounted his horse and rode down the road. He wasabout 12 years old at this time when his father was bushwacked by Confederates.
(this is from an oral history my grandfather William Cecil Jones told me)

I have an old Family Group sheet my mother filled out when she visited some of Elias Thompson's Grandchildren. On it it says he was half-Indian. His physical description certainly can go with that from his military records in the Civil War. His regiment was also called the ----------Indian, too. So it very well could be.
