    • 2/3/99 SAMUEL FISKE BRIGGS (1772-1822) 1772 Born son of JOSEPH BRIGGS (144) and MARGERY DODGE BRIGGS(143) 15 Apr 1772. Was a sailor and appeared to be extremely close to older brother Nathaniel as he acted as attorney for sis ter in law BathshebaBriggs in 1804 after death of Nathaniel. Also SAMUEL na med a son Nathaniel and their children were in business together. 1810 Cens us living in New Shoreham,Newport County, RI Nathaniel Briggs (1758-1802) He was the older brother of SAMUEL FISKE BRIGGS by 14 years. Son of JOSEPH BRIGG S and MARGERY DODGE BRIGGS and was sometimes called Capt Briggs 1758 Born Ne w Shoreham, Block Island 18 Aug 1758 1793 Married Mary Collins (159) daughte r of John Collins from Hopkington,RI. 27 Aug 1793 1795 MaryCollins Briggs die d at 25 years buried Block Island Cemetary. born 21 Feb 1795 1797 Married Bat hsheba Gardiner (160) daughter of John Gardiner of Washington County,RI. 10 D ec 1797 1800 Owned principle mercantile store on island 1802 Both Bathshebaand Nathaniel died Livermore History of Block Island: Nathaniel was a man of sterling worth and unblemished character. Active member in the Baptist Church . Mr Briggs built a home known as "The Great House" located south of "Woonsock et House" In 1802 visited NYC for medical treatment and died there. Nathaniel born abt 1758 held the con fidence and esteem of the whole community. The principle part of the mercantil e business of the island was transacted at his store. His son Collins G Brigg s was born Block Island 30 Sept 1798 and in WAR of 1812 served his country in the U. S. Navy, subsequently entering the merchant service until he removed t o Exeter, Otsego County NY died 12 Nov !874 Bowen Farm German, Chenango Count y,NY Eathon Briggs (1775- 1775 Born 11 Oct 1775, New Shoreham,Block IslandYounger brother of SAMUEL FISKE BRIGGS by 3 years was born on Block Island a nd lost at sea at an early ageHis son Eathon C became a master of a ship and sailed from NY for several years. Later he entered the mercantile business in NYC. In 1894 he and his family moved to Kingsman,Trumball County,Ohio to purs ue farming. Jeremiah Briggs (1792-1876) Born Block Island 30 Dec 1792. He was the older brother of SAMUEL FISKE BRIGGS and uncle to JEDIDIAH BRIGGS. Durin g the war of 1812 Jeremiah commanded a USgunboat spending several years in t he merchant service. Along with his cousin Capt Nathaniel Briggs he founded t he J N Briggs Transport Co. which operated between New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Later they acquired the Camden Amboy Transport Line and the new company became "Briggs Swiftsure Line" which they operated for about 40 yrs. (1830-1870). Although precise evidence is lacking it is probable that Jededi ah worked for the family firm. Jeremiah became wealthy and was a generous bac kerof "Seaman's Fund and Retreat" on Staten Island. In the 1850 US census J edediah is listed as living at Seaman's Retreat. Jeremiah was also prominentl y identified with the Marine Society of the Port of New York. He resided at a fine farm on Jamaica Turnpike at Richmond Hill LI died 28 Jun 1876. The Ma rine Society was founded 7 March 1770. The Society had the power to loan mone y for land and goods. Members were elected by ballot and 3 black balls meant exclusion. The funds were primarily used tosupport widows and children of th e members. In 1791 there were 1000 beneficiary's receiving aroun 400 lbs ann ually (NY Directory 1791 by William Duncan) Nathaniel Briggs (1803-1876) Was involved in BrooklynÙs Christian Aid Society, the selection of aparade and p ark ground in Brooklyn, directorship of Nassau Water Co. He was a trustee of St. JohnÙs M.E. Church. He married Elizabet Bowe
