    Notes
    • CAPTAIN MATTHEW FULLER came to New England in 1640, and settled firstat Plymouth, MA, where in 1642, he was granted ten acres of land. Theearliest record of him however is dated October 25, 1640, when MatthewFuller sells to Andrew Ring "his garden place in Plymouth." (PlymouthColony Deeds, Vol. I, 1620-1651, p. 64.) He applied for admission as afreeman, September 7, 1642, but was not allowed to qualify until June7, 1653. He was one of the leading military men of the colony.

When the first company was organized under command of Capt. MilesStandish in 1643, he was appointed sergeant, and became lieutenant,October 5, 1652. "At the General Court held at Plymouth, October 5,1652, the Court doth allow and approve of Matthew FullerforLieutenant of the Military Company of Barnstable." (Plymouth ColonyRecords, Vol. III, p. 17.) On June 20, 1654, he was lieutenant underCaptain Standish in command of fifty men, organized for the proposedexpedition against the Dutch of New Amsterdam. This company wasordered to rendezvous at Sandwich, Plymouth colony, June 29, to embarkfrom Manonet, in the barque "Adventure," to join the other EnglishColonial forces, but on June 23, news was received that peace wasconcluded between England and Holland and preparations for war cease

On October 2, 1658, Lieutenant Fuller was elected to the Council ofWar, and was made chairman in 1671. In that year too he was lieutenantof the Colonial forces in the expedition against the Indians ofSarconet. That he was a physician also and stood well in hisprofession, is shown by his appointment, December 17, 1673, as surgeongeneral of the Plymouth Colony troops and also of the MassachusettsBay troops. He served as captain of his company in King Philip's war,and took a distinguished part. As early as 1652, he served as deputyto the General court, and was "a man of sound judgment, goodunderstanding, and great courage, faithful to his trusts, liberal inpolitics and tolerant in religion." He was in fact too tolerant forhis day and too frank in speech to avoid trouble.

He was indignant at the persecution of the Quakers and publiclycensured the law against them for which he was promptly fined, but theCourt continued to confer offices of trust upon him. He was the firstresident physician in Barnstable, and died there, sometime betweenJuly 20, 1678, the date of his will, and October 20, of that year, when it was proved. His estate amounted to a large sum for those days, the inventory showing, among other items, "pearls, precious stones, and diamonds." His will names his wife,"Frances," whose surname hasnot yet been established, and all of his children or their heirs, whoshared in his estate, namely "son John and wife Bethia; daughter MaryJones, wife of Ralph Jones; daughter Ann Fuller, wife of SamuelFuller; daughter Elizabeth Rowley, wife of Moses Rowley, and to MaryFuller, wife of son Samuel, deceased; grandchildren, Shubael andJedediah Jones; Thomas, Jabez, Timothy, Matthias, and Samuel, sons ofhis son Samuel; and Sarah Rowley; and sons-in-law, Ralph Jones, SamuelFuller, Jr., and Moses Rowley.
