    Notes 
    • Mary Owen was the first white woman settler to come to the NorthwestTerritory. She came with her husband and family on June 5, 1788 to the Marietta Colony. They accompanied the Honorable James M. Vernum and Mary served as his nurse.
      She also had the distinction of being the first nurse in theNorthwest Territory. Based upon her sacrificial service during the smallpox epidemic, she was granted one hundred acres of land at Rainbow Ohio by the Ohio Company.

      Mary's maiden name Gardner was also spelled Gardiner according to somesources.
