- ALVIN DETWEILER Alvin F. "Al" Detweiler, 76, of Boyertown, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005 at his residence. He was the husband of E. Kathryn "Kass" Detweiler for 56 years. Born in Sellersville, he was a son of the late Mahlon and Hannah (Freed) Detweiler. He was ordained to the Christian ministry June 26, 1949. He pastored Allentown Mennonite Church for 15 years and Boyertown Mennonite Church for 30 years. He was youth camp director at Men O Lan, Trumbauersville, from 1949 to 1963 and was instrumental in founding and then directing Spruce Lake Wilderness Camp in Canadensis from 1964 to 1983, which is sponsored by the Franconia Mennonite Camping Association. Al became well known throughout Boyertown by driving a school bus for nine years. He was a current member of Boyertown Mennonite Church of Boyertown. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Twila Nazario of Exeter, Leona Kolb of Gillett, Suzi Weiss of Center Valley, Aleta Kulp of Lewes, DE, Carol Smith of Quakertown, Karla Moonsammy of Pottstown, Krista Detweiler of Norristown, Philip Detweiler of Reading, Steven Detweiler of Royersford, Douglas Detweiler of Lewistown, Kenton Detweiler of Maui, HI, and Marc Detweiler of Green Lane; two sisters Anna Halteman and Ruth Detweiler, both of Lebanon; 33 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other children who called him "Pop Pop". He was preceded in death by his brother, Lester Detweiler. A brief service will be held Friday, Dec. 9 from 6:30 to 6:45 PM at Boyertown Mennonite Church, 275 Mill St., Boyertown. Viewing hours will follow from 7 to 9 PM in the church fellowship hall. Viewing hours will be held from 10 AM to 3 PM, Saturday, Dec. 10 at Franconia Mennonite Church, 613 Harleysville Pike, Franconia. A memorial service will follow at 7 PM. Private burial will take place at Boyertown Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Campership Fund, Spruce Lake Wilderness Camp, RR1, Box 605, Canadensis, PA. Arrangements are by the Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home, Souderton.
