    Notes
    • Jacob immigrated from a village in Wolfsheim, Germany near Mainz in the Palat inate regi on of Germany. He arrived in the year 1707 along with his brothers Johannes and Martin, (diel man arrived later in 1717). Jacob, Johannes and M artin were all charter members of the Mennon ite church in Germantown, Philad elphia. Built in 1708, the log meetinghouse was the first on e in America. It was there in 1710 that Jacob & Sarah were married in the presence of the ful l congregation by Dirk Keyser (who in addition to his duties in the Mennonit e church was als o a successful silk merchant.) Although the original structu re no longer exists, its successo r was built on the same grounds in 1770 and today remains an active church. It is located a t 6121 Germantown Ave in Ph iladelphia and is an historic landmark. Jacob had moved to the Ski ppack area , which was still then known as Bebbers Township, by 1709 and he & his broth ers we re among seven trustees to whom 100 acres of land were granted in 1 717 by Matthias Van Bebbe r, for whom the township was named. The Skippack Men nonite Congregation (the second oldest in America) was extablished an d the f irst building erected in 1725. The bulding currently in use was builit in 184 4. Some o f the stormiest phases of the Mennonite schism of the 1840's center ed around this congregatio n, with the conservatives breaking off to form the ir own congregation, the Upper Skippack Men nonite Church. The original congr egation, now known as the Lower Mennonite Church, has been s erved continuous ely for over 200 years by descendants of the original Kolbs. Jacob was among the signers of a petition for a road to be laid out> "2 June, 1713...th e in habitants of Skippack and several adjacent plantations in said county...That in the afore said township and neighborhood thereof many families already set tled, and probably not a fe w more to settle in and about the same. And as ye t no road being laid out or established to a ccommodate your petitioners, bot h for the public good and their convenience, humbly desire a n order for the laying out and establishing a road or cartway from the upper end of the sai d township down to the wide marsh of Farmer's Mill, which will greatly tend to the satisfacti on of your petitioners, who shall thankfully acknowledge the favor." By 1734, Jacob was liste d in the township of "pariomen and Skippak e" as owning 150 acres. He eventually owned up to 2 26 acres. Jacob died in a tragic accident at age 54, as described by his obituary notice. "O n the 4th instant, October, 1739, Jacob Kolb, of Skippack. As he was pressing cider, t he bea m of the press fell on one side of his head and shoulder and wounded h im so that he languishe d about half an hour and then died, to the exceeding grief of his family, who are numerous, a nd concern of his friend and neighbo rs, among whom he lived many years in great esteem." At t he time of this dea th, the tract of land surround the Kolb family homestead located just nort h of the village of Skippack, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, occupied 226 acr es. the land w as equally divided between his two sons, Dielman and Henry.
