    • Norman A. DerstineÇ 87Ç of Towamencin Twp.Ç formerly of FranconiaÇ died ThursdayÇ Sept. 23Ç 2004Ç at the Dock Community in Towamencin Twp. He was the husband of Lizzie (Nyce) Derstine for 66 years.
      Born in FranconiaÇ he was a son of the late Henry and Katie (Alderfer) Derstine.
      At the age of 11Ç he began living and working on the Harleysville farm of his sisterÇ Minnie A. Anders and her husbandÇ Reuben. Sunday mornings he would ride his bike to his home in Franconia and then return to the farm Sunday evening. At the age of 15 in 1932Ç he began working for Hallmanís Creamery in Franconia Twp. When he was 16Ç he became the creameryís deliveryman and used his initiative to find new customers. From 1942 to 1949Ç he operated a store in KensingtonÇ where he sold butterÇ eggsÇ poultry and produce. In 1949Ç he purchased the former Bucherís CreameryÇ relocated to Franconia and changed the name to Derstineís Farm Maid Butter. After selling the business in 1967 to John KellerÇ he continued to work at Kellerís Creamery in Harleysville in sales and customer relations until 1974. He then worked for Bergeyís Inc. in FranconiaÇ where he delivered parts and shuttled cars.
      Mr. Derstine was a longtime member of Salford Mennonite Church in Harleysville.
      In addition to his wifeÇ he is survived by three daughtersÇ Elizabeth Frederick and her husbandÇ Glenn D.Ç of ChalfontÇ Mary Ann Cassel and her husbandÇ Chester H.Ç of Souderton and Kathleen Harris and her husbandÇ Robert R.Ç of Lansdale; a sonÇ James Derstine of Washington D.C; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by a sonÇ John DerstineÇ in 2000; two sistersÇ Minnie Anders and Eva Derstine; five brothersÇ Willis DerstineÇ Henry DerstineÇ Clayton DerstineÇ Irwin Derstine and Elwood Derstine; and two infant siblings.
      Viewing hours will be MondayÇ Sept. 27Ç from 8:30 to 10 AM in the chapel at Dock CommunityÇ 275 Dock Drive in Towamencin Twp.Ç where services will follow the viewing. Burial will take place at Salford Mennonite Cemetery in Harleysville. Because of Normanís concern for families with mentally challenged membersÇ memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally IllÇ 100 S. Keswick Ave.Ç GlensideÇ PA 19038. Arrangements are by Anders-Detwiler Funeral Home in Souderton.
