- .May 3, 1832 This is a suit in chancery transferred from the
Vigo Circuit Court - The Circuit Judge being interested. The bill states
that Samuel Biddleman and William Battels were jointly indebeted to the
complainants in 1826 and for the price of 2/3 of an Orleans boat and cargo
of corn. That Bidleman died in New Orleans within 6 mo. or a year after the
debt was contracted: that Battels is absent from the country and insolvent.
Balance of $182.25 unpaid...Samuel Bidleman at the time of his death was
possessed of considerable goods and chattels in Vigo Co...with some other
property was sold by the widow to Benight, with whom she has since
inter-married. Object of the bill is a discovery of the assets of Bidleman's
estate and payment...Defendants deny the debt claimed..except the sum of $33
as the price of 1/3 of the boat, and this sum is alleged to have been
paid......Joseph Benight bought Indiana land in 1823 for Samuel Bidleman Sr.
of New York for Samuel Jr. to live on in Ind., which he did until he went to
New Orleans in 1826......Bill dismissed...complainant pay his costs and
defendants recover from the complainant their costs and charges for their
defense.
