- William received a common school education, attending school in thewinter months, as soon as he was old enough, he worked on his fathersfarm in the summer. Before he was quite 17, he obtained a certificate toteach and on Jan. 1, 1870, took charge of his first school. For overthirteen years he labored in the school room until failing in health, hewas compelled to seek another occupation. At the age of 22 whileteaching a country school at the modest sum of $400.00 a year, he wasmarried. Three years later he secured an appointment to a position inthe Central school of St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada. After four yearsof hard work he was promoted to headmastership of the school. But theincreasing labor, the close confinement and the loss of two of hischildren so wore upon his health, that in 1883 he resigned his positionto seek some more active outdoor life. During the same year he began thestudy of medicine and the next year he removed to Chicago, where in 1886he received his degree at the college of Physicians and Surgeons and atonce settled down in the same city to engage in the practice of hisprofession.
