    • When a small boy his father died leaving his mother with a large family of children. He was brought up in the immediated neighborhood where he was born, working on a farm, and assisting his widowed mother. At the age of 16 he attended the Sellersville Academy and High School, and a year later began teaching school at a salary of $28.00 per month. the next year the salary was raised to $30.00 and later to $40.00. Afrter eight years, and a great deal of hard study, he entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church being a licentiate for three years. The first charge he served was in the city of Philadelphia, Mount Olivet, at a salary of $500.00.
