Hugo's death certificate indicates that he was born on 18 September 1883, but this information may be incorrect. By taking into account the facts that (1) his older brother Joseph reported his birthdate as September 1883 and his age as 16 in this census; (2) Hugo's reported age and birthdate in this census; and (3) the death record gave Hugo's birthday as 18 September, James L. Gardiner has concluded that the actual date of birth is 18 September 1885. Hugo Tefft, age 14; birthdate September 1885; birthplace, MT; occupation, farm laborer.
